Myra vs Praktika: the AI avatar tutor meets the tea bird
The verdict in one breath
Praktika is a conversation practice app: you talk with expressive AI avatar tutors and get corrected on pronunciation, grammar, and word choice in real time. Myra is a foundations app: per-word tone scoring, HSK-aligned vocabulary and characters, spaced-repetition games. One trains you to speak fluidly with what you know; the other teaches you to know from zero. Beginners need the second first — and then the first becomes genuinely valuable.
What is Praktika — and does it teach Chinese?
Yes. Most people know Praktika from English learning, but it now offers a dozen languages including Mandarin. You pick an avatar tutor and a scenario (travel, work, interviews…), talk, and get in-conversation corrections with three feedback intensities, backed by 1,000+ situational lessons. Worth knowing: the Chinese course is newer and thinner than the English one — English remains Praktika's most mature product.
Why these are two different races
1. Conversation spends vocabulary — a curriculum supplies it
Talking to an AI works when you have words and patterns to spend. In the zero-to-HSK-2 stage, what you need is systematic input: leveled vocabulary, correct tones from day one, growing character recognition. That's Myra's whole day job — 41 games on a spaced-repetition schedule. Praktika assumes you bring the vocabulary with you.
2. Tones: in-flow corrections vs deliberate drilling
Praktika corrects pronunciation mid-conversation — useful, but Mandarin tones need deliberate, per-word practice (see our tones guide for the traps). Myra scores the tone of every word and cycles the exact tone you missed back into review. In-flow correction doesn't replace that.
3. Characters
Voice conversation never touches the script. But the HSK — and reading menus, messages, signs — does. Myra's path introduces characters early, by level; with Praktika, characters are essentially out of scope.

When to pick which
Pick Praktika if: you're at HSK 3+ and the missing piece is speaking reflexes — an avatar is an infinitely patient conversation partner; or you're also learning English, still its strongest course.
Pick Myra if: you're a Vietnamese speaker going from zero to HSK 3 — the stage that needs foundations, per-word tone feedback, characters, and a curriculum, not conversational polish. And if you take a class, Myra turns your class's own PDF into review games — practice that matches today's lesson.
Honest answer: these apps compound rather than compete — Myra builds the vocabulary daily, Praktika gives it somewhere to run once you're ready. See the whole field in the 7 best apps of 2026.
Myra teaches from zero with per-word tone scoring and 41 games. The beta is fully free, no card required.
